Lovćen is one of Montenegro’s most iconic mountains, towering over the Bay of Kotor and the entire Montenegrin coastline, offering spectacular views that stretch from the Adriatic Sea to the distant peaks of the country’s interior. It’s not merely a natural attraction, but a place steeped in historical and cultural significance. The mountain’s dramatic landscape provides panoramic vistas extending to the Adriatic Sea and the inland mountain ranges, making Lovćen a remarkable destination for both nature lovers and history enthusiasts alike.

A large part of the mountain is encompassed by Lovćen National Park, which spans approximately 62.2 km² and is home to a diverse range of plant and animal species. Situated at the crossroads of the Mediterranean and continental climates, the park is characterised by lush forests, rocky landscapes, vast pastures, and breathtaking viewpoints.

The Mausoleum of Petar II Petrović Njegoš
The most renowned landmark of Lovćen is the Mausoleum of Petar II Petrović Njegoš, dedicated to Montenegro’s greatest poet, philosopher, and ruler. The mausoleum is located atop Jezerski Vrh (1,657 m), one of the two highest peaks of the mountain. To reach it, visitors must climb 461 steps, leading through a stone gateway to this monumental structure, a masterpiece by sculptor Ivan Meštrović.
Inside the mausoleum, a massive granite dome rises above an imposing marble statue of Njegoš, weighing an astonishing 28 tonnes. Beneath the dome, in the crypt with a ceiling painted as a starry sky, lies Njegoš’s tomb.
This mausoleum is one of Montenegro’s most significant cultural and historical landmarks and a place of pilgrimage for all admirers of Montenegrin history and literature.
The View from the Summit of Lovćen
One of the most breathtaking moments of a visit to Lovćen is the view from its summit. From Jezerski Vrh, on a clear day, it is even possible to see the coast of Italy, while in the opposite direction, the panorama stretches across Montenegro’s towering mountains and the vast blue expanse of the Adriatic Sea.
The Bay of Kotor, lying at the foot of the mountain, is particularly impressive from this vantage point. Its winding fjords, medieval towns such as Kotor and Perast, and the picturesque islands of Our Lady of the Rocks and St. George make this one of the most stunning panoramas in Europe.
