Durmitor National Park

Durmitor National Park is one of Montenegro’s greatest natural treasures and a symbol of the country’s north. This mountain, which spans over 39,000 hectares, has held the status of a national park since 1952, and was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1980.
Durmitor is adorned with majestic peaks, dense coniferous forests, and crystal-clear rivers, creating a space where nature reigns in its most beautiful form.
A special gem of Durmitor are its glacial lakes, known as “mountain eyes”, with Black Lake standing out as one of the most famous and frequently visited spots in this part of Montenegro.
Additionally, the park is home to the Tara Canyon, the deepest in Europe and the second deepest in the world.
The rich plant and animal life makes Durmitor even more unique. Wild goats, bears, and eagles are just part of the diverse fauna that inhabits the area. The preserved ecosystems allow for a chance to experience nature in its purest form.
Whether you’re a fan of hiking, cycling, or rafting, or simply seeking peace and quiet away from the crowds, Durmitor offers an experience that will be remembered for years to come.
How Did Durmitor National Park Form?
Durmitor was shaped over thousands of years, as glaciers, rivers, and rainfall sculpted its landscape. This process formed the high peaks, deep canyons, and glacial lakes, which are now known as Durmitor’s “mountain eyes”. The limestone base also created numerous caves and underground waterways, giving the region its distinct appearance.
Due to its natural beauty and rich plant and animal life, Durmitor was declared a national park in 1952, making it a protected area where nature can thrive undisturbed, and visitors can enjoy its pristine beauty.
The Lakes of Durmitor
Durmitor National Park is renowned for its beautiful glacial lakes, known as “mountain eyes” due to their crystal-clear reflections in the mountain landscape.
These lakes were formed by the melting glaciers, and each one holds its own unique story and beauty.
The most famous of these is Black Lake, located near Žabljak. It is the largest and most visited lake in Durmitor, divided into Great and Small Lake, connected by a narrow channel. Surrounded by dense coniferous forests and towering peaks, it offers a spectacular view throughout the year.
In addition to Black Lake, there are other notable lakes, such as Snake Lake, hidden in dense forests, the Škrčka Lakes, located in the heart of a mountain amphitheatre, and Wavy Lake, perfect for those seeking peace and tranquillity, far from the tourist paths.
Each of these lakes is a part of Durmitor’s unique landscape, offering the chance to experience the untouched nature of this mountain massif.
Wild Horses in Durmitor
One of the most fascinating sights in Durmitor National Park is the wild horses that roam freely across the vast expanses of the mountain. These noble creatures are descendants of once-domestic horses left behind by herders many decades ago. Over time, they have adapted to the harsh conditions of Durmitor, symbolising the strength, endurance, and freedom of nature.
Visitors can often spot them on the plateaus of the park, particularly in the regions of Sinjajevina and Krnovska Plateau, where they continue their lives in peace, far from urban areas. Their presence further enriches the beauty of this landscape, providing a unique sight for those exploring Durmitor.
